Notan è una parola giapponese che significa “luce-ombra”. Essa rappresenta uno dei principi fondamentali che aiutano la composizione.E’ importante notare che Notan non ha nulla a che fare con la scelta del colori ma è, piuttosto, la capacità di vedere le cose in termini di bianco e nero, positivo e negativo; di conseguenza a costruire la forza delle immagini. Quando le composizioni funzionano in bianco e nero, allora funzionano sempre.
Che gli abbiano dato un nome o no, gli artisti di tutte le culture hanno sempre riconosciuto il valore di notan. Molti dispositivi sono stati inventati per esplorare questo concetto. Il “Vetro di Claude” è un vetro convesso, nero, utilizzato per riflettere un paesaggio in formato ridotto con colori attenuati e minori dettagli.
Comunemente si attribuisce l’invenzione di questo attrezzo al pittore francese Claude Lorraine (1600-1683. L’approccio più comune è, comunque, quello di lavorare guardando con gli occhi socchiusi in modo da tagliar via i dettagli e concentrarsi sul chiaroscuro, oppure è quello di visualizzare i soggetti attraverso filtri fotografici – generalmente blu o verde.
Ma più di ogni altra cosa notan è un’abilità che si impara e si approfondisce. Come ha detto Junichiro Tanizaki: “Trova la bellezza non solo nell’oggetto in sé, ma nelle ombre e le luci che l’oggetto ti mostra”.

A strong notan design is therefore the key to a strong painting. Without it, both color and line fail to reach their full impact. Many of the most powerful paintings have the simplest value structures. That is to say, they only use two, three, or four major values.” (Barry John Raybould)
Esoterica: Very often the quality of a work can slip because artists simply fail to work things out in the best order. A carefully drawn and even beautifully prepared work may, for example, have poor notan. Never forget that drawing and line can be the enemies of pattern. “Think pattern first, then drawing, then color. The character of your painting is resolved in the pattern.” (Edgar A. Whitney)
